Target Audience

This is the questionnaire I asked a variety of people whom are of different gender and age so i got a diverse amount of feedback. Results showed that people from different ages tend to feel then same emotions from the song and also enjoy the song. They each have different hobbies and different music interests however all like reggae. This therefore proves you can be of any age and like this genre of music. If I were to ask then any other questions I would have asked:
What's your nationality?
What are you interests?
What is your job or current studies?

I would have asked this so then I'm more able to back up that there isn't really a target audience for reggae anymore.

Recce Photos - The Forest

'The Forest' location shots.
I chose to do apart of my music video in a forest as it defeats the stereotypical reggae music video set in a hot country. I think that the forest will be a nice contrast to the busy Town and less busy beach. This location could suggest it is heaven like but he it quite a lonely place therefore represents hell. ("Think you're in heaven, but you're living in hell")

I would like Tom to be walking toward the camera with no one else in shot as I want to get the difference from the other locations. He will however be doing the same as he shall be walking to ward the camera.

This area has the opportunity for my extras to use a lot of space therefore i would like then all run as if they were playing a game of something. begin in a huddle then disperse.

This is where I would like a group of friends to be running toward the tree as someone has climbed it and is about to jump.

I would like extras to be throwing leafs or sticks at each other

I would like a dog walker in this shot as this is a stereotypical place to see someone on a walk. Also I like the repetition of the same dog and dog-walker in each location.

This could be another place where tom all of a sudden becomes alone again as its a different area of the forest. It can also match the lyrics due to the fact that he was surrounded by people then all of a sudden not with others.

Theses are just extra forest stop so I could see the potential shot/shot ideas I could use.

Recce Photos - The Beach

This is where the long boarder will board pass the camera and tom. I wanted a long boarder to represent the everyday things you could see that you associate with a beach.

This is where I want to skaters to weave and do a figure of 8 between the camera and tom. I wanted roller-skater so then they match the idea of the long boarder and I also wanted it to be a busy location so then you get more captured by the background activities.

I want a person drinking coffee on the corner of the slope and to spit it out as it's 'too hot'. I would like this to happen so then I take advantage of the slow-motion.
The dog and the dog walker to be sat on the edge of the slop and also get up to throw the ball for the god to chase.
Two bat and baller's playing however then to jump off so then the can run to a different location to continue playing bat and ball on the sand.

On another rock I would like someone to do a back flip. As you normally see park-our people on the beach. It is also something cool to look at in slow motion.

Two people to be playing in the sea.
As tom is looking around at his location so then you see he is thinking out the lyrics he is telling. Because Tom is doing this it also makes the audience do it as well therefore getting a response from the audience.

Recce Photos - The Town

  'The Town' location shots.
Using a town as one of my locations shots as I'd like to use everyday locations. This is because the lyrics of the song such as 'Think you're in heaven but, you're living in hell' will look good as its an everyday location that my audience will know. It should make them think about where they live and how it can be persevered as heaven like but could actually be a hellish place to be.

This is 'Friday's Cross' in Ringwood Town.
I wanted to start the music video here as I know the road is long and wide which I need so I can use as many extras as i can for background detail such as a smoker or a dog walker. Ringwood is easy to get to for my cast and I which is extremely helpful so then when it comes to filming it wont be as difficult/stressful. As It is a public place there should be by passers or members of the public who stop and look at the video or walk past. This is great as I need as many people to make the scene look at naturalistic as possible to set the atmosphere of the video.

Tom (main guy) Will start sat on 'Friday's Cross' with the camera over his shoulder. He should be flicking through her music which will show cast a crew photos for the credits. He shall then choose 'Time Will Tell' and the camera shall start to track him as he walks toward it.

To the left of this photo is a Pub where I shall have a person(s) stood smoking so then in slow-motion you should be able to see the smoke coming out of his mouth. To the right is where I would like by passers to walk.

This is where I want the group of friends to be walking across the street and also I want parents swinging their child in the air on the right hand side of this location. whilst this is going on tom will still be walking in front of the camera.

There is a bench to the right of this photo and this is where I would like two old people sat on the bench. I will have car come up this road when I film however I hope this will happen to once again make the background detail as normal as it can be.

Ideas drafting

I think these reply sheets are very useful in order to come up with/ aid already made ideas for my music video. I've noticed that a common occurrence for how the song make them feel is 'happy', 'relax' and 'calm' which is good as I think I'd like to match this and make my video a relaxed and slow motion picture (much like people have recommended).  No one has suggested to apply a tint to my final edit therefore I will take this into consideration as I like the idea of being suttle and natural, which I also think is needed for a reggae music video considering other reggae music videos I've watched such as 'Jimmy cliff' and 'shaggy'.

Rock album cover

I have chosen to make my rock band album cover to be in black and white as I thought it was more appropriate as the rock albums I looked up were also in black and white. For this album cover I experimented a lot of Photoshop as I know I need to develop my skills. I used so many new aspects of Photoshop such as 'the burn brush' to hand write the front cover. I also used a guitar in both sides as obviously this is a main instrument in a rock band. If I were to do it again I would have taking a picture of a person and not just an instrument because I think it looks a bit bland and not so interesting.

Preliminary-Hip Hop poster

This is my preliminary Hip Hop poster and I have chosen to include a mean looking boy (who is played by Lucy Froud) with his hoody up with a evil version of himself as a shadow. I did this because as I associated the name 'flush with cash' to be more gangster like  typical hip hop posters/music videos involving a manly boy with a flirtatious girl present. I choose to keep the writing bold but simple as I think it would have been unnoticeable and inappropriate due to the busy image. I put the main information in a bigger font size as this needs to stand out so people know who the poster is of.

I haven't used Photoshop much therefore I recapped on some skills that I have learnt such as changing the opacity. If I were to do this again I would have changed the lighting so it was more dark. This is because I think this is more suitable for the sinister look I was hoping to portray.

Andrew Goodwin (1992)

A media theorist who wrote a book called ‘dancing in the Distraction Factory’ he suggests that there is 6 key feature that are in music videos and 5 ways in which they analyse music videos.

  1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics- certain features are expected out of a video depending on the genre of the music, for example a girl artist are expected to have a dancer and close ups of the singer
  2. There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. The lyrics are represented with images- themes, mise-en-scene and events of the video match with the lyrics of the song, to help portray the message across. For example a lyric could be 'love', then in the music video we see people showing this affection.
  3. There is a relationship between the music and the visuals (mood/ tone). The tone and atmosphere of the visuals reflect that of the music- the cuts and edits of the video are in sync with the rhythm and the beat of the song matching cuts or effects to specific drum beats or notes. For example if the song is a depressing song about  break up, Andrew discovered it would match the tone and also show depressing things.
  4. The demands of the record label will include the need of lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style)- this allowed the record label to promote a set image for the band/artist, which will help target audiences empathise with the band/artist.
  5. There is a frequent reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stage, etc.) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female boy- the ‘male gaze’ is often used to attract a male audience. The male gaze is a focus on presenting things that appeal to men.
  6. There are often intertextual references (to films, tv programmes, other music videos) music videos reference other forms of media, most commonly film, but can also be tv or other music videos

5 ways to analyse a music video

Thought Beats

1. This is where you look at the music itself. we have to take into account the STRUCTURE  of the song. We are able to identify the artist via the way in which every thing is shown on the video and the distinct voice.
2. The VOICE  of the song and where the artists voice is extremely unique and can dorm identification or trademarks that work well with the star.
3. THE ARTISTS MODE OF ADDRESS- this is where the songs can be seen as stories and the artist has become the storyteller, making the music video a two communication device.

 narrative and performance
1.
Goodwin suggests in terms of narrative and performance either there is a link between the visuals and songs or there is a link between the genre of the music and narrative. he also thinks it can be just performance base.
2. Music videos should have coherent repeatability. This means the audience can watch videos over and over without becoming bored.

Star Image

1. The STAR IMAGE is another vital aspect of music videos.
2. Meta narrative 'BIG STORY' which describes the development of the star over time. This has a important part to play within music videos.
3. This pays attention to the stars costume (clothing),persona and style.
4. Some music videos continue the same styles as they have a specific identification 'badge'. An example of this could be Nelly wearing the blaster, juxtaposition with Mileys massive change.
5. How the audience relates to the star, the star images will depend on whether on likes or dislikes them.

Relation of visuals to the song

There are a few ways in which videos work to promote a song; illustrate, amplify and disjuncture.
Illustrate- the video relates the lyrics of the song
Amplify- the video relates to the lyrics of the song however over emphasizes it
Disjuncture- the video does not relate to the lyrics of the song at all.

Technical Aspects

1. All of the technical aspects that make up a music video
2. camera work, movement, angle, mise-en-scence, editing, sound and special effects.
3. Speed, camera movement, editing, cutting and post production are all forms of use of the camera.
4. Lighting and colour help to set moods and emphasis key movement of the song for dramatic effects.
5. Mise-en-scene, the setting of music videos is vital as it needs to look authentic to attain professionalism

Types of Music Videos

3 main types of music video:

  1. Performance- based videos show only the band/artist performing the song. It’s the cheapest version, large variety of shots
  2. Narrative- based music videos contains mostly footage that shows a story line that runs throughout, or sometimes several storylines running parallel to each other. Related to lyric or film, TV programme. Easier to watch as you’re following a story, elements of performance. Found more in sentimental songs (love songs)
  3. Conceptual- videos area based around a single concept or idea. Nothing to do with the artist or lyrics. And idea that is different to everything therefore it stands out from the rest (A random idea that could have special effects in it).
